# Conversion Rate Optimization
## CRO Methodology
### Research → Hypothesis → Test → Implement Cycle
```
1. RESEARCH — Gather quantitative + qualitative data
2. ANALYZE — Identify friction and opportunity
3. HYPOTHESIZE — Form specific, testable hypothesis
4. PRIORITIZE — Score and order hypotheses (ICE/PIE)
5. TEST — Run A/B test or implement directly
6. LEARN — Document result and extract insight
7. ITERATE — Use learnings to inform next hypothesis
```
### Data Sources for Research
| Source | What It Tells You |
|--------|------------------|
| Google Analytics | Where people drop off, what pages perform |
| Heatmaps (Hotjar) | What users click, where they scroll to |
| Session recordings | How users actually navigate |
| Exit surveys | Why users didn't convert |
| User interviews | What users think, feel, need |
| Support tickets | What confuses or frustrates customers |
| Sales call recordings | Objections, hesitations, vocabulary |
## Landing Page Optimization
### Above-the-Fold Checklist
- [ ] Headline communicates value proposition in ≤8 words
- [ ] Subheadline explains what it is and who it's for
- [ ] CTA button visible without scrolling
- [ ] CTA copy is action-oriented and benefit-specific
- [ ] Hero image/video shows outcome (not product interface alone)
- [ ] At least one social proof element visible (logos, review count)
- [ ] No navigation menu (removes exits from landing pages)
- [ ] Page load time < 2.5s LCP
### Conversion Killers Audit
- [ ] Slow page speed (test with PageSpeed Insights, target LCP < 2.5s)
- [ ] Generic headlines ("Welcome to our platform")
- [ ] Weak CTA ("Submit", "Click here")
- [ ] Too many form fields
- [ ] No social proof
- [ ] Unclear pricing
- [ ] No mobile optimization
- [ ] Competing CTAs (multiple primary actions)
- [ ] No urgency or reason to act now
- [ ] Trust signals absent (SSL indicator, privacy policy link, reviews)
### Landing Page Structure (High-Converting)
```
[HERO]
Headline + Subheadline
Primary CTA + friction reducer
Hero visual
[SOCIAL PROOF BAR]
Company logos or review count + star rating
[PROBLEM STATEMENT]
Relatable pain description
[SOLUTION INTRODUCTION]
How your product solves it
[FEATURES → BENEFITS]
3–5 benefit blocks (feature name + outcome + proof)
[SOCIAL PROOF (DEEP)]
2–3 customer testimonials with photos, company, title
Or case study snapshot: Before/After metrics
[OBJECTION HANDLERS]
FAQ covering top 5 objections from sales calls
[FINAL CTA]
Repeat primary CTA + urgency + friction reducer
[FOOTER]
Minimal: privacy, terms, company name
```
## Heatmap Analysis
### What to Look For
| Pattern | Meaning | Fix |
|---------|---------|-----|
| Click on non-link elements | Users expect it to be clickable | Make it clickable or redesign |
| No clicks on CTA | CTA is not visible or compelling | Move up, increase contrast, rewrite copy |
| Rage clicks | Broken element or user frustration | Fix the element |
| High scroll depth only | Content is engaging but CTA placed wrong | Move CTA to where users stop scrolling |
| Low scroll depth | Above-the-fold not compelling | Redesign hero |
### Hotjar Scroll Map Action
- If 70%+ of users don't scroll past fold: redesign hero
- Place CTAs where scroll depth drops significantly (that's where users are deciding)
- If desktop and mobile scroll maps differ: optimize separately
## Session Recording Analysis
### What to Watch For
1. Where do users hesitate before clicking?
2. Do users back up and re-read anything?
3. Do users start filling out a form then abandon?
4. Do users try to click non-clickable elements?
5. Do users use site search? What do they search for?
### Recording Review Protocol
- Watch 20 recordings per week minimum
- Tag each: convert / bounce / rage-click / confusion
- Note top 3 observations per session
- Aggregate patterns across 20+ sessions before acting
## Form Optimization
### Form Conversion Principles
1. **One column** beats multi-column for completion rate
2. **Label above field** beats placeholder-only labels (accessibility + mobile)
3. **Inline validation** beats submit-time error (immediate feedback)
4. **Progress indicator** for multi-step forms
5. **Autofill compatibility** — correct `autocomplete` attributes
### Form Field Audit
| Field | Necessary? | Can We Get It Later? | Remove? |
|-------|-----------|---------------------|---------|
| First name | Yes | No | Keep |
| Last name | Maybe | Yes (MOFU) | Remove |
| Phone | Maybe | Yes | Remove (unless required) |
| Company | Yes (B2B) | No | Keep |
| Company size | Nice to have | Yes | Remove |
| How did you hear | Nice to have | Yes | Remove |
### Autocomplete Attributes (HTML)
```html
<input type="text" name="firstname" autocomplete="given-name">
<input type="text" name="lastname" autocomplete="family-name">
<input type="email" name="email" autocomplete="email">
<input type="tel" name="phone" autocomplete="tel">
<input type="text" name="company" autocomplete="organization">
```
## Trust Signals
### Trust Signal Hierarchy
1. **Security**: SSL badge, SOC 2, GDPR compliance
2. **Social proof**: Logo bar (known brands), review ratings (G2, Capterra)
3. **Specificity**: "12,847 teams" beats "thousands of teams"
4. **Guarantees**: 30-day money-back, free cancellation
5. **Media mentions**: "As seen in [Forbes/TechCrunch/etc]"
6. **Awards**: Industry awards with badge
7. **Team / founders**: Faces and names (humanizes company)
### Review Widget Placement
- Hero section: Star rating + review count
- Pricing page: Industry-specific testimonial adjacent to each plan
- Checkout/trial: Recent review + reviewer photo
## Social Proof Patterns
### Types of Social Proof (by strength)
| Type | Strength | Example |
|------|----------|---------|
| Expert endorsement | Very High | "Recommended by [Industry Analyst]" |
| Customer case study | High | "Acme increased conversion 40% in 90 days" |
| Testimonial with photo | High | Quote + real person + company + title |
| G2/Capterra rating | High | 4.8/5 from 847 reviews |
| Customer logos | Medium | Row of recognizable brand logos |
| User count | Medium | "Join 12,000+ teams" |
| Press mention | Medium | TechCrunch / Forbes logos |
| Generic quote | Low | "Great product!" — J.S. |
### Testimonial Template (high-converting)
```
"[Specific result achieved] in [timeframe].
Before [your product], we [painful before state].
Now [specific after state with metric]."
— [Full Name], [Title], [Company]
[Company logo] [Photo]
```
## Quick Wins Checklist

- [ ] Reduce form to minimum required fields
- [ ] Add friction reducers under CTA
- [ ] Ensure mobile-optimized (test on real devices)
- [ ] Fix any page speed issues (LCP > 2.5s)
- [ ] Add customer logos or review count
- [ ] Make phone number/chat visible for high-intent visitors
